Vithanage, Vidyanee; Bhadra, J.H.A.
This article attempts to analyze the work-family
balance of male and female academics in Sri Lankan
universities, in view of the dearth of research on the gendered
nature of work-family balance in academia. This study examines
gender differences in work-family balance in academia.
With the purpose of accomplishing the aforesaid objective, a
survey was conducted with 63 male and 63 female university
academics of Management Faculties in the University of
Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo, University of
Kelaniya and University of Ruhuna. The sample was selected
based on the cluster sampling technique. Further, the work-family balance was measured along three dimensions, namely,
time balance, involvement balance and satisfaction balance.
An independent sample t-test was used for the purpose of data
analysis. The results show that there is a significant difference
in time balance, involvement balance and work-family balance
between male and female academics. However, there is no
statistically significant difference in satisfaction balance
between male and female academics of the selected sample.
Especially, social support may create a balance between work
and family life for women academics in Sri Lanka.

Vithanage, V.; Arachchige, B.J.H.
Work-family balance is a challenging issue for many working adults. As far as
Sri Lanka is concerned, employees’ awareness and perception about work-family
balance is very limited as compared to the western countries. Academics in
Sri Lanka are no exception and they receive very little or no family-friendly support
from universities as they struggle to achieve a balance between work and family
with their never-ending workload. The objective of this study is to investigate
the relationship between university academics’ work-family balance and job
performance. Further, this study aims to find the dimensional impact of workfamily balance on job performance of university academics. With the purpose of
accomplishing the aforesaid objectives, a self-administered survey is carried out
among 200 university academics from the four largest government universities
in Sri Lanka. The sample is selected based on simple random sampling from the
management faculties of the respective universities. This study finds a statistically
significant positive relationship between work-family balance and job performance
among academics. It also finds that a significant positive relationship exists
between work-family balance dimensions and job performance. Further,
satisfaction balance is identified as the major contributor to job performance

Rathnaweera, R.R.N.T.; Jayatilake, L.V.K.
Job performance is one of the most important dependent variable and is associated with both
employee and organizational-level outcomes. The study aims to review existing studies to
discuss the conceptualization of employee job performance including diverse definitions of
the construct, to describe the frameworks that are developed for specific occupations and
applicable across all jobs, to describe the frameworks that are developed for specific
occupations and are applicable across all jobs, to determine the most widely used dimensions
of job performance in the literature. There is still no consensus and universally accepted
definition of what performance is. Scholars have conceptualized job performance in different
angles. Even though some scholars have attempted to model the entire domain of job
performance, several scholars have focused on specific performance. Extensive literature
review shows that employee performance is multidimensional construct and the most
frequently used dimensions of job performance are task performance, contextual
performance, adaptive performance and counterproductive performance.

Rathnaweera, R.R.N.T.; Jayatilake, L.V.K.
Human resources are playing a key role in achieving competitive
advantage, and thereby achieving established goals. The primary
purpose of this paper is to examine the scholarly literature on
high performance work practices (HPWPs) including definitions
and components of them. Authors conducted a comprehensive
review based on articles published in the past 30 years. The great
interest of researchers on HPWPs has caused a variety of
definitions. Therefore, the construct of HPWPs does not have an
agreed single definition among researchers. The literature review
revealed that conceptual confusion exists about the meaning of
HPWPs. Therefore, many similar terminologies have been
emerged and used interchangeably for the fuzzy notion of
HPWPs. Little agreement exists among scholars relating to
precise HPWPs that should be included in the HPWP bundle for
improving organizational or employee performance.
