The premier aim of a university is to be integrated with the modem world in
order to originate professionals and educationists who are capable of rendering a
yeomen service in national and international levels. Library plays an important role
in performing the above task successfully and effectively. Human resource and its
function is a critical factor in the accomplishment of this task. Here, their job
satisfaction and motivation could be recognized as a variable of a unique
importance. The study mainly focuses its concentration on a serious investigation of
what factors are critically influenced on the enhancement of the level of motivation
of the staff of the university library.
Survey method is the key strategy in the collection of data in this enquiry in
which a composition of major techniques such as questionnaires, interviews and
observation was used in the process of data collection. Out of these techniques,
questionnaire was used as the major base for collecting data. In addition,
manuscripts, magazines, articles, ordainments and records in the relevant field were
used as sources in collecting secondary data. Moreover, University of Ruhuna was
the selected institution for the staff of the library. The sample sought to study 54
respondents in which library assistants, book binders, library attendants and
labourers were selected according to their ranks.
111
Two main key variables influenced on staff motivation were taken into an
earnest consideration in this study. They were monetary rewards and non-monetary
rewards. Certain areas such as ‘ what is the level of job satisfaction of the
respondents in the institution ? ’ ‘ to what level motivation, the ultimate mental
result could reach ? ’ and ‘ what sort of an eventual influence it could make on the
function of the institution ? ’ were covered in the study. The dependent variable was
the rewards of the officials whereas the job satisfaction, motivation and function of
the institution were used as independent variable in the study.
The study is solely restricted to the University of Ruhuna as the data gained
was represented only the university. 92 . 6% respondents had responded in the
enquiry out of which the majority had been motivated by non-monetary rewards.
Moreover, the fulfillment of the above factors was seen to be very stumpy and
accordingly, their level of motivation was also found to be in a minimum standard.
It is vital to make some strenuous emphasis on certain factors such as the
acceptance of the officials, administration, communication and coordination, and
institutional policies in turning factors related to the function of the institution, job
satisfaction, and motivation into an enhanced direction which is in a negative
function in the present scenario.
Furthermore, fruitful administration, transparency, and equality are also
emphasized as factors of vital importance in focusing consideration on diverse
matters in the present library sector and moving it into a lasting existence
successfully and effectively.
