<title>An evaluation of the effectiveness of the granary area programme</title>
<link>http://ir.lib.ruh.ac.lk/handle/iruor/19388</link>
<description>An evaluation of the effectiveness of the granary area programme
Gunasekara, G.K.D.S.
The Granary Area Programme (GAP) was designed to enhance the productivity of rice farming in areas with high potential for rice cultivation in Sri Lanka. The purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of the programme interventions. The findings of this study suggest that this programme was unable to make a significant contribution to productivity enhancement in the paddy sector and to increase &#13;
the farmers’ adaptability to new agronomic practices. However, the GAP has contributed to the development of the extension system.

<title>DNA typing of dessert banana cultivar „kolikuttu‟ („silk‟) accessions by microsatellite markers</title>

<description>DNA typing of dessert banana cultivar „kolikuttu‟ („silk‟) accessions by microsatellite markers
Pushpakumari, H.W.L.; Samarasinghe, W.L.G.; Senanayake, S.G.J.N.
Fourteen Kolikuttu accessions showing morphological variation and Fusarium wilt tolerance were col lected. Extracted DNA was subjected to PCR using six SSR primers. PCR products were separated by &#13;
PAGE and bands were visualized, scored and statistically analyzed using POPGENE 1.32 version to &#13;
obtain the dendrogram by genetic distance matrix. Out of 19 SSR alleles amplified, 12 were polymor phic resulting in 63.16% loci polymorphism. Based on the dendrogram, three different „Kolikuttu’ ac cessions known as “Athdath Puwalu”, the accession collected from Telijjawila, and accession collected &#13;
from Angunakolapelassa were clustered separately. These three accessions could be considered as dif ferent genotypes.

<description>Physico – chemical properties of mature green tomatoes (lycopersicon esculentum) coated with pectin during storage and ripening
Delina Felix, E.; Mahendran, T.
A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of pectin as an edible coating on the postharvest quality of mature green tomatoes at 30°C. The tomatoes were dipped in the concentrations of 1, 3 and 5% &#13;
(w/v) pectin solutions for 5 min and stored at 30 ± 0.2°C. Fruits coated with 3% of pectin showed great er retention of ascorbic acid, titratable acidity and total sugars of 9.96 mg%, 0.41% and 11.2% respec tively during storage. The shelf life of the tomatoes coated with 3% pectin solution increased up to 4 &#13;
weeks without showing signs of decay and quality losses.

<title>Analysis of factors affecting fresh milk consumption among the mid - country consumers</title>
<link>http://ir.lib.ruh.ac.lk/handle/iruor/19385</link>
<description>Analysis of factors affecting fresh milk consumption among the mid - country consumers
De Alwis, A.E.N.; Edirisinghe, J.C.; Athauda, A.M.T.P.
This study focused on analysing the consumer attitudes, demographic and economic factors that affect ing fresh milk consumption among the mid-country consumers of Sri Lanka. Data were collected &#13;
through a consumer survey conducted in Kandy district at randomly selected super markets, groceries, &#13;
milk bars and retail shops. Factor analysis was carried out in order to weigh up the consumer attitudes &#13;
and factor scores were introduced to the final model as independent variables which can be categorized &#13;
as cost and usage, nutrition, sensory factors and availability. An ordered logistic regression was carried &#13;
out to find out the relationships between number of demographic and socio-economic characteristics of &#13;
consumers such as age, gender, level of education, income, size and composition of the household, ethnic &#13;
group and presence of diseases that affect fresh milk consumption. Results from estimation of a ordered &#13;
logistic regression model of consumption show age of the respondent, cost and usage related attitudinal &#13;
factor and Nutrition related attitudinal factors are the key determinants of milk consumption levels; &#13;
however, household monthly income, health problems affect on fresh milk consumption and level of &#13;
education play a more important role in consumption. Finally, these findings suggest the marketing &#13;
strategies which are most suitable to fit with the consumer expectations.
