dc.description.abstract Students' academic achievement is crucial in producing exceptional graduates who contribute positively to the society. This study aims to examine the influence of the learning medium on student performance, focusing on the University of Ruhuna. The university offers English medium degrees across faculties except for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, where students can choose their preferred language medium. The objective of the study was to determine whether the learning medium employed by the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences affects their academic performance. Additionally, the study explores the significance of English grades obtained by students in their Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations in relation to their choice of learning medium. To gather primary data, a structured questionnaire was distributed to 150 undergraduate students from various academic levels. The collected data underwent analysis using chi-square independence tests. The findings reveal that the choice of learning medium does not significantly influence academic performance. However, both Ordinary Level and Advanced Level English grades were found to have a notable impact on the selection of learning medium. These outcomes suggest the potential value of introducing English-medium degree programs within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to accommodate students' preferences and aspirations. Further research is recommended to explore the advantages and disadvantages of offering Englishmedium programs at the University of Ruhuna. This expanded investigation would shed light on the potential benefits and challenges associated with aligning the learning medium with student preferences and goals, ultimately enhancing the educational experience and outcomes at the university. By understanding the effects of the learning medium, the university can make informed decisions to optimize student success and contribute to the overall development of a well-rounded student body capable of making meaningful contributions to the society en_US
