A Philosophical Study on Sexuality with the Perspectives of Foucault and Freud

Abstract

Sexuality has a long historical background in which the studies on sexuality have been numerous over time. The position of the world on sexuality is also different and its religious intervention is portrayed negatively. However, sex is rooted as a biological concept and cannot be confined specifically. Sexuality becomes a thorny issue that has engraved many philosophers who have attempted to interpret from their point of view as a central issue of human existence. Two major figures recognized sexuality as a key concept; they are, Sigmund Freud and Michel Foucault. The main objective of this study is to manifest the contradictory notions of sexuality and how two of them have discussed this concept from a different point of view to a wider audience. This paper analyzes how Foucault attempted to provide an attitudinal change regarding the discourse of sexuality while Freud confined it to academic and medical purposes.
