Performance Analysis as a Management Tool for Application of Water Safety Plan: A Case Study Done at Greater Kandy Water Treatment Plant (GKWTP)

Abstract

Even though the United Nations has declared that every human being is having equal right to access potable water, ensuring accessibility is becoming a challenge due to the pollution of the limited water resources. Water Safety Plan (WSP) has been recognized as the best tool by WHO in drinking water guidelines for evaluation of water treatment plants for their performances. Accordingly, the drinking water treatment process of Greater Kandy Water Treatment Plant Kandy, Sri Lanka was evaluated to determine correlation between the plant performance and institutional culture. « Hazard identification, operational and maintenance factors limiting the plants performance and water quality parameters were analyzed. All water quality parameters were below the drinking water standards while ammonia of treated water exceeded the limit (0.1098mg/L) and nitrate were increasing along the treatment process. The study pointed out the major technical, management, operational and maintenance issues, which limit the performance and water quality. Detailed and continuous monitoring of the performance is highly recommended.
