dc.description.abstract This paper examines the main characteristics of the food security problem in the rural sector of Sri Lanka. According to this analysis, rural food security problem is associated with low calorie intake, low energy consumption, high food expenditure as a percentage of total expenditure and a low level of selfsufficiency. Based on this analysis the paper presents a strategy for improving the food security of the rural sector in Sri Lanka. It proposes that this strategy should focus on increasing the levels of income of rural households and improving productivity of the domestic agricultural sector en_US
