Effect of intercrops on the intensity of basal stem rot of coconut and soil microbial population
Karthikeyan, A.; Bhaskaran, R.
Growing intercrops am basal stem rot affected coconut plantations reduced the incidence of the disease.
Among the intercrops, banana was very effective in containing the disease. Intercropping in diseased
plantations increased the coconut yield. The population of fungi, actinomycetes and the antagonistic
organism Trichoderma spp increased significantly in soils of intercropped coconut. The population of
bacterial biofertilizers phosphobacteria, Azotobacter and Azospirillum was also higher in intercropped
plots.

Gypsum - A suitable material for the mass multiplication of Trichoderma viride
Karunanithi, K.; Muthusamy, M.; Seetharaman, K.
Different carrier materials were screened for the mass multiplication of Trichoderma viride. Talc and
gypsum were significantly superior in maintaining the survival of T. viride even after 150 days ot storage.
Since gypsum is thirty times cheaper than talc it may be used for the mass multiplication of T. viride, for
commercial purposes, to replace talc.
