Present scenario and issues in relation to livestock production systems and challenges ahead (Key Note Speech)
De Silva,W. Kumara
Availability of land for habitat, forest cover and agricultural production are very much limited in the world and it is
almost one fifth ofthe entire surface ofthe globe. As of today, it is estimated to number the population of the world to
be 7.069 billion by the (USCB). The USCB estimated that the world population exceeded 7 billion on March 12,2 0 1 2 .
The population growth rate peaked at 2.2% in 1963, and had declined to 1.1% by 2011 and expected to increase to 80
million per year by 2040. Based on continents the population has been estim ated as A sia-4,140,336,501, Africa 994,527,534, Europe-738,523,843, North A m erica-528,720,588, South A m erica-385,742,554, O ceania-36,102,071,
Antarctica-4,490. By and large it could be observed that Asia leads in its population compared to any other continent
in the world and therefore always under the severe pressure for demand for resources and natural competition for
scarce resource would be inevitable.
