dc.description.abstract Background Studies related to body composition among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are scarce. This information is useful when planning their long term management. Objectives The objective of this study was to assess the body compositions and bone mineral status of patients with ESRF compared to community controls. Methods Patients with ESRF (n=44) attending Teaching Hospitals at Karapitiya and Kandy and age and sex-matched community controls (n=44) were recruited. Anthropometric and body compositions measurements using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry were obtained. T-test was used to compare the means between the two groups. Results Mean (SD) BMI of patients with ESRF and controls were 21.8±3.6 and 23.3±3.7kgm-2 , respectively (p=0.01). No significant difference was observed between patients and controls with regards to total body fat content, truncal fat, fat percentage and bone mineral content. Mean lean mass of the ESRF patients were significantly lower compared to the controls (mean difference=2.12kg, p=0.037). Total body bone mineral densities of patients were significantly lower compared to the control (mean difference=2.23, p=0.029). Conclusions Patient with end stage renal failure has lower BMI, lean mass and lower bone mineral density compared to the age and sex-matched controls. en_US
