Abstract:
A study was carried out to evaluate the effects of using different types of organic
manure on growth of Catla catla and the effect of water quality parameters, in
outdoor ponds. Fishes weighing 0.32 ± 0.06 g were stocked at a density of four
Fishes per m2 with a volume of 6, 4.60 m3. Effects of chicken manure and
vermicompost on fish growth were investigated. The study was carried out for a
period of 24 weeks. Non-fertilized ponds were used as controls. Physico-chemical
and biological parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved
Oxygen, biological Oxygen demand, primary productivity, salinity, alkalinity,
nitrate, and phosphate concentration were investigated in chicken manure treated,
vermicompost treated and non-fertilized ponds. A study was carried out to evaluate
the effects of using different types of organic manure and water quality parameters
on the growth of Catla catla in outdoor ponds. After 24 weeks growth of Catla
catla in the chicken manure treated ponds was significantly higher than those in
vermicompost treated ponds and non-fertilized ponds. Most of the water quality
parameters did not show any difference except BOD, GPP and orthophosphate.
Significantly higher amounts of chlorophyll “a”, BOD level, GPP and Phosphate
concentration were recorded in ponds fertilized with chicken manure when
compared with vermicompost treated ponds and non-fertilized ponds. But there
was no significant difference of nitrate concentration among chicken manure
treated ponds, vermicompost treated ponds and control ponds. Significantly higher
numbers of zooplankton was recorded in ponds fertilized with the chicken manure.
But there was no significant difference of zooplankton number in vermicompost
treated ponds and non fertilized ponds. Organic matter loading was significantly
high in chicken manure treated ponds and vermicompost treated ponds when
compared to the non fertilized ponds.
Mean comparison of physico-chemical parameters and Biological parameters were
carried out by one-way ANOVA to compare each treatments.
