Abstract:
An experiment was conducted during summer season of 2016 and 2017 at Instructional farm of Uttar
Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India to study the "Effect of varying
levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the performance of Green gram (Vigna radiatq L. Wilczek)". The experiment
was carried out in Randomized Completely Block Design with 9 treatments and 3 replicates. Pooled data
of the experiment showed that treatment receiving [T6] 25 kg nitrogen ha-1 in the form of urea recorded
the highest growth attributes namely leaf area index (1.30), dry matter accumulation [18.10 g plant-1), no.
of nodules (35.62) and yield attributes namely no. of pod plant-t (19.49), pod length (10.37 cm), no. of
seed pod-i (12.57) and 1000 seed weight (49.03 g), which leads to more grain (920.68 kg ha 1J and straw
yield (2200.37 kg ha-1) followed by 30 kg N ha-1 (T7) and 35 kg N ha -1 (T8). Treatment receiving no
nitrogen (T1) recoded significantly lowest values of all growth and yield attributes. For every kilogram
increase of nitrogen beyond 25 kg. There was a yield reduction to the extent of 8 to 16 kg ha-1. Seed
protein content {21.61,0/o) and protein yield [199 Kg ha- 1) were also found to be highest in To which is very
important as nutritional aspects of green gram might be due to more uptake of nitrogen (54.60 kg ha- 1)
