Abstract:
A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out on people living in the vicinity of a tyre factory and on age and gender matched people in about 8km away from the factory. Details of the respiratory symptoms were obtained by an investigator administered questionnaire. Respiratory system was examined by medically qualified investigators. FVC, FEV1, FVC/FEV1 and PEFR were assessed using the spirometer. There were 200 and 199 individuals aged between 12-70 years in the study and control groups respectively. Prevalence of respiratory symptoms were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p<0.05).
