Abstract:
BMD correlates with anthropometric measures. However, this association may vary depending ethnicity, environmental flctors and menopausal state. The aim of this study was to identify probable relations between anthropometric measures and TBBMD in pre- and post-menopausal females. Data were collected from 229 adult females including 124 pre-menopausal and 105 post-menopausal females aged 20- 69 years. TBBMD was measured with Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) technique. Measured anthropometric indices included height, weight, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC). Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. Data were adjusted for age and partial correlations were calculated between variables. In pre-menopausal females TBBMD was positively correlated with weight (r = 0.42, p = 0.001), BMI (r = 0.40, p = 0.001), WC (r = 0.28, p = 0.002), HC (r = 0.33, p = 0.001) while in post-menopausal females TBBMD was positively correlated with height (r = 0.25, p = 0.013), weight (r = 0.32 orrelated with pre- and post-menopausal females respectively. WHR was not correlated with TBBMD of both pre- and post-menopausal females. Based on the results of linear regression modeling studies, in pre-menopausal females weight (R2 = 0.18, p = 0.001) was emerged as the main determinant of the TBBMD while height and BM! (R2 = 0.16, p = 0.001) were persisted in post-menopausal females. Height, weight and BMI show the strongest correlation with the TBBMD in the studied subjects where they may affect the BMD. Weight is the best predictor of TBBMD in pre-menopausal females while height and BM! are the most important predictors of TBBMD in post-menopausal females.
